A Procedural Modeling Grammar for Virtual Urban Environment Creation
نویسندگان
چکیده
The creation of virtual urban environments, corresponding to realworld settings, has become a very frequent subject of content development for Virtual Reality Systems, serving multiple activities such as urban planning, virtual tourism and education, among others. Their extensive and complex nature, however, makes their conception very expensive and time-consuming, which has led many researchers for the look of semi-automatic methods for their creation. This paper describes the PG3D Grammar, a specification for modeling guidelines, which aims to provide a powerful control over the procedural modeling processes based on GIS data. This is achieved by allowing the integration of real-world data source queries and by providing management facilities to handle their large number, dimension, format and level of detail. The grammar can then be integrated into a procedural modeling tool for generating very large virtual real-world urban environments without further need for human intervention.

Procedural Modeling as an Analytical Tool for 3D Survey in Urban Design Assessment
This paper examines procedural modeling as a tool for 3D modeling creation. Procedural modeling historically has been used for 3D visualization of natural features, but with the release of the software CityEngine in 2008, the technology can easily be adopted also in problem domains dealing with urban environments. Then, we will examine and compare two types of modeling, traditional and proc...

The problem of modeling large-scale virtual urban environments has remained challenging for computer graphics researchers and urban planners. Cities are difficult to model in detail, since they hold diverse and complex geometries. Building large-scale 3D city models by means of photogrammetric reconstruction is a time and resource intensive, often semi-automatic process and does not provide dat...
متن کاملProcedural Content Graphs for Urban Modeling
Massive procedural content creation, for example, for virtual urban environments, is a difficult, yet important challenge. While shape grammars are a popular example of effectiveness in architectural modeling, they have clear limitations regarding readability, manageability, and expressive power when addressing a variety of complex structural designs. Moreover, shape grammars aim at geometry sp...
متن کاملUrban Dictionaries: Modeling and Simplifying City Environments
Urban environments are challenging to model because they are both very large and very diverse. The size of the environment makes capturing the details of every structure prohibitive, leaving us with only sparse information. Photogrammetric reconstruction attempts to build 3D structures but is often not robust and requires manual input, thus making it difficult to scale to large areas. Procedura...
متن کاملA Survey of Procedural Techniques for City Generation
The computer game industry requires a skilled workforce and this combined with the complexity of modern games, means that production costs are extremely high. One of the most time consuming aspects is the creation of game geometry, the virtual world which the players inhabit. Procedural techniques have been used within computer graphics to create natural textures, simulate special effects and g...
